Retro Game developers unite, as the Retro Gamer 2006 competition has been officially kicked off ! Underware Design are one of the sponsors and there are other great prizes on offer from the likes of X-Arcade, Retro Gamer Magazine, Cosmigo and many more. There's over £3,000 worth of prizes this year, including a GP2X hand-held console, an X-Arcade Trackball unit, a SmartNAV head tracker, books, software, subscriptions, games and even a dance mat!

The theme of the competition this year is: 'Good remakes of good games that anyone can play, regardless of their ability'.

The key here 'anyone can play'. That means no impossibly hard shooters/plat formers /puzzlers etc that rely on specialized knowledge. So your game needs to be accessible and playable for everybody! Remember, Not every gamer has lighting reflexes or a killer system.
Being a retro competition your entry must be a remake of an existing 8 or 16bit title. Which is the whole point of the Retro Remake site after all. Choose carefully though, as their mainly interested in games that are yet to be remade. So it's in your best interest to browse their existing game archive prior to starting. Which is a pretty impressive collection. Also, keep in mind their not interested in pixel perfect remakes either, so the idea is to embellish the original game.

The competition ends at 23:59hrs (UK Time) on August 31st, 2006. So you've plenty of time to get coding.
